This European Standard specifies general requirements for the construction, testing and performance of electrically operated carbon monoxide gas detection apparatus designed for continuous domestic operation. The goal is to identify faulty fossil fuel or solid fuel devices so they can be repaired or replaced.
The function of the standard is not to monitor low CO levels for health purposes. The device can run on mains power or battery. Such an apparatus is designed to warn of an acute CO level and to allow the passenger to react before they are exposed to significant risk. Additional requirements for apparatus to be used in recreational vehicles and similar facilities are specified in EN 50291-2.
This European Standard specifies two types of apparatus:
