EN 1935 Building Hardware, Single Axis Hinges, Requirements and Test Methods

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of EN 1935 test standard. This European standard specifies requirements for lifting or fixed pin type uniaxial hinges for use on access windows and doors.

EN 1935 Building Hardware, Single Axis Hinges, Requirements and Test Methods

Such windows and doors may or may not also be equipped with door closing devices. It includes static loads, shear strength, and wear tests allowed during the endurance cycle for the following hinges:

  • Installed on the edge of the door leaf or window leaf and opening only in one direction;
  • For a door leaf mass weighing up to 160 kg, the axis of rotation is within 30 mm from the edge of the movable element;
  • For a sash with a mass of up to 60 kg, the axis of rotation is within 30 mm from the edge.

This European standard classifies hinges for four categories of use and also specifies the maximum allowable torque resulting from the frictional resistance produced within the hinge during durability testing.

Corrosion protection requirements are specified for hinges that are not intended to be protected once installed. There are no restrictions on the materials used or the manufacturing methods provided that the hinge complies with the requirements for its application.

The suitability of uniaxial hinges for use in fire compartment door assemblies is determined by performance tests in addition to the performance tests required by this European standard.

This European standard does not apply to hinges incorporating spring assisted door closing mechanisms. Door closers with door coordinator devices (with or without electrically operated hold-open devices) are covered by EN 1158.

Although the fastenings used to fix the hinges to the window and door assemblies are not covered by this European standard, such fasteners are used for testing if the fastener to be used has been supplied or specified by the manufacturer.
