It may not be applicable to oil-treated blacks as the oil may prevent the black from properly wetting with water.
A known mass of carbon black is washed through a test sieve with a controlled flow of water and the residue is dried and weighed. The test sieve aperture is selected from the range given in the appropriate material specification.
