EN 50085-2-1 Cable Tray Systems for Electrical Installations - Part 2-1: Cable Tray Systems Intended for Mounting in Walls and Ceilings

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of EN 50085-2-1 standard. This part of the EN 50085 standard covers the installation of cable trunking systems (CTS) and cable trunking systems (CDS) intended for accommodation and, where necessary, insulated conductors, cables and electrical or communication systems. The maximum voltage of these installations is 1000 V AC and 1 500 V DC.

EN 50085-2-1 Cable Tray Systems for Electrical Installations - Part 2-1: Cable Tray Systems Intended for Mounting in Walls and Ceilings

These systems are designed for mounting on walls or ceilings. They can be recessed, flush-mounted or semi-flush mounted, surface-mounted, or mounted away from the surface using fastening devices. This standard does not apply to trunking systems, cable tray systems, cable ladder systems, power line systems or equipment covered by other standards. This standard will be used in conjunction with EN 50085-1.

General Conditions for EN 50085-2-1 Test

Each test is performed on a new sample of duct length or duct length of 250 mm ± 5 mm. The duct length or duct length with a usable cross-sectional area less than or equal to 500 mm2 need not be tested.

The specimen is securely fixed to a rigid and smooth support, such as a 10mm thick plywood sheet, using 16mm outer diameter flat metallic washers and metallic screws. When the outer diameter of 10 mm is too large, an appropriate smaller washer is used. Anchors are positioned at (200±5) mm centers along the length of the sample.

Within the width of the sample, fixation is made as close as possible to each side wall. For CTS/CDS with triangular or similar cross-section, the sample is fixed to the wall only. If the manufacturer's instructions require the use of cable holders, the test is performed using cable holders and, if possible, fixed symmetrically along the length.

The sample is subjected to an evenly distributed load of 1,0 g per meter length, per mm² of the declared usable area for cables. The load is distributed between the compartments in proportion to the declared usable area. The load consists of copper insulated conductors or cables conforming to class 5, HD 383 S2 or flexible insulated conductors or cables of similar mass per meter.

A preload of 10% of the load is applied to allow the specimen to settle and is removed after 5 minutes ± 30 s. The meter is then calibrated to zero. No pre-installation required for classified CTS/CDS.

Insulated conductors or cables with a nominal cross section of 25 mm² are placed in the sample so that approximately 50% of the load is obtained. If the dimensions of the compartment do not allow a 25 mm² insulated conductor or cable to sit, insulated conductors or cables with a nominal cross section of 2,5 mm² are used. Insulated conductors or cables with a nominal cross section of 5 mm² are placed on larger cables to obtain the total load within a tolerance of ± 2,5 g.

Non-metallic and composite duct lengths or non-metallic and composite duct lengths are tested at the maximum application temperature declared by the manufacturer.

In order to fulfill the various functions of the system, an assembly is made from one or more duct lengths or duct lengths with the relevant system component, if any, and prepared according to the manufacturer's instructions. More than one assembly may be required to perform the various functions of the system. In each direction, the length L of the duct or channel length exiting the functional area associated with the function of the system is the width of the duct length or duct length W, or 250 mm, whichever is greater. L tolerance is ± 25 mm.
