EN 50102 Degrees of Protection Provided by Electrical Equipment Enclosures Against External Mechanical Impacts (IK Code)

This standard refers to the classification of the degrees of protection provided by enclosures against external mechanical impacts when the rated voltage of the protected equipment is not greater than 72,5 kV. This standard is only applicable to equipment enclosures where the particular standard specifies the degree of protection of the enclosure against mechanical impacts (expressed in this standard as shocks).

The purpose of this standard is to give:

• Definitions for the degrees of protection provided by enclosures of electrical equipment with respect to the protection of equipment inside the enclosure against the harmful effects of mechanical shocks;
• Definitions of degrees of protection;
• Requirements for each assignment;
• Tests to verify that enclosures meet the requirements of this standard.

The "IK" rating or code is an international standard that standardizes and defines the resistance of enclosures for electronic equipment to mechanical shock, and this rating can be an important factor when choosing an outdoor camera or camcorder that can be installed in a field.

Before the appearance of the IK code, a third digit was added to indicate the level of impact protection, for example IP66, in relation to the IP code of the corresponding protection. The non-standard use of this system was one of the factors that led to the development of this standard, and it uses a separate two numeric codes to distinguish it from the different legacy systems.
