EN 50194 Household and Similar Appliance for Detection of Combustible Gases - Test Methods and Performance Characteristics

EN 50194 standard covers the general rules for the construction, tests and performance of electrically operated devices used for the detection of combustible gases, designed for continuous operation in the case of fixed installation in homes and similar places. The devices can be powered from the mains or from the battery.

In the EN 50194 standard, two types of devices that operate in case of air gas, natural gas or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) leakage are listed below:

  • Type A device : A device that gives an audible and visual alarm and acts as an exit signal capable of actuating, directly or indirectly, a closing element or other auxiliary element.
  • Type B device: A device that gives only visual and audible alarms.

Devices used for the detection of toxic gases such as carbon monoxide are outside the scope of this standard. Devices that comply with the EN 50194 standard are not considered suitable for industrial or commercial facilities to which EN 60079-29-1 applies.
