This European Standard is for testing laboratories and alcohol lock manufacturers. It defines the requirements and test procedures for type approval. A few parameters (such as alcohol concentration or breath volume) are specified in this European Standard for the purpose of type testing only according to this European Standard. However, when alcohol locks are in use, the values of the prescribed parameters may need to be set differently depending on national regulations or user requests.
This European Standard also applies to alcohol locks integrated into the vehicle's other control systems. This European Standard does not apply to alcohol locks for general preventive use, instruments for measuring the alcohol concentration in the ambient air in the vehicle, alcohol locks without a mouthpiece, mounting methods, and vehicle-mounted alcohol kits.
The purpose of alcohol locks is to increase traffic safety by preventing people whose alcohol concentration exceeds a certain limit value from driving a motor vehicle. The EN 50436 series specifies test methods and key performance requirements for alcohol locks and provides guidance for decision makers, buyers and users.
The content and requirements of this part of EN 50436 are based on the experience and requirements of drink-driving offender programs in different countries over several decades. Therefore, alcohol locks used in programs for drink-driving offenders must comply with this European Standard.
Alcohol locks for general preventive use are the subject of EN 50436-2. General preventive use, which concerns a greater number of drivers and vehicles, applies to both professional and private motor vehicle drivers.
The purpose of the EN 50436 series is to identify key performance requirements and provide relevant test methods for existing technologies. Alcohol locking technology continues to evolve and more innovations can be expected. These may be taken into account in new parts or revisions of this European Standard.
Non-blocking should be obtained after delivery and analysis of an accepted breath sample with a breath alcohol concentration below the limit value. The alcohol lock must be in a blocking state without additional intervention from the driver after the vehicle engine has been switched off and a restart period has expired.
