This part of EN ISO 140 specifies two sets of methods (element methods and general methods) for measuring the airborne sound insulation of façade elements and entire façades respectively.
Element methods aim to estimate the sound attenuation index of a façade element, for example a window. The most accurate element method uses a speaker as the artificial sound source. Other less accurate element methods use existing traffic noise. Global methods aim to estimate the difference in outdoor/indoor sound levels in real traffic conditions. The most accurate global methods use real traffic as the audio source.
The road traffic element method will serve the same purposes as the speaker element method. It is particularly useful in situations where the speaker element method cannot be used for various practical reasons. These two methods will often give slightly different results. The road traffic method tends to result in lower values of the sound reduction index than the loudspeaker method.
The global road traffic method provides the actual reduction of the front at a given location relative to the position 2 m in front of the front. This method is the preferred method when the purpose of the measurement is to evaluate the performance of the entire façade, including all side roads, at a specific location relative to nearby roads. The result cannot be compared with laboratory measurements.
The global speaker method provides sound reduction of the facade according to the location 2 m in front of the facade. This method is especially useful in cases where the actual noise source cannot be used for various practical reasons. The result cannot be compared with laboratory measurements.
