EN 54-3 Fire Detection and Fire Alarm Systems - Part 3: Fire Alarm Devices - Sirens

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of EN 54-3 standard. This part of the EN 54 standard specifies requirements, test methods, and performance criteria for fire alarm sounders, including audible sounders in a fixed installation, to provide an audible warning signal between fire detection and fire alarm systems and building occupants.

EN 54-3 Yangın Algılama ve Yangın Alarm Sistemleri - Bölüm 3: Yangın Alarm Cihazları - Sirenler

This European Standard provides for the evaluation and verification of the constancy of performance (AVCP) of fire alarm sounders against this EN. This European Standard is not intended to cover:

  • Loudspeaker-type devices primarily designed to broadcast emergency voice messages produced from an external sound source;
  • For example, supervisory sounders in control and indication equipment.

The purpose of a fire alarm siren is to alert the person(s) that a fire emergency should occur in or around a building so that such person(s) can take appropriate action.

This European Standard recognizes that the exact nature of audio requirements, ie frequency range, temporal pattern and output level, will vary with the nature of the installation, the type of risk present and the appropriate measures to be taken, the type of signals used. due to other non-emergency alarms and national differences in tradition and practice. The resulting standard therefore specifies a common method for testing the operational performance of sounders according to the specification declared by the manufacturer, rather than imposing common requirements.

In some European countries, certain sound frequencies and sound patterns are used. These may be given in national codes or standards. Attention is drawn to national safety regulations that may specify the maximum safe sound pressure level received by the occupants of a building.

This European Standard gives the common requirements for sounders as well as their performance under conditions of climatic, mechanical and electrical interference likely to occur in the service environment. This European Standard covers sounders for a category of indoor or outdoor application environment.

In fire detection and fire alarm systems, audible sounders are used as alarm devices to alert occupants of a building that a fire risk is occurring, using a combination of an attention-grabbing signal and special voice messages. The requirements, test methods and performance criteria specified for sirens in this standard also apply to audible sirens. Additional requirements, test methods and performance criteria specific to audible sounders are also included.
