Its main field of application is to establish a basis for classification in fire classes B1ca, B2ca, Cca, Dca and Eca according to the European system for Euro classes.

In the EU, construction products must have the CE mark according to the Construction Products Directive (CPR). Cables covered by the EN 50575 product standard are affected by CPR, so CE marking is a requirement for cable to be sold within the EU.

The basis of the CE marking is fire classification according to EN 13501-6. This includes fire testing according to the EN 60332-1-2 method. The method forms the basis of B1ca , B2ca , Cca , Dca and Eca fire classes.

In addition to the benefits of CE marking, the method also provides important information about the fire properties of the cable and is therefore often used in product development contexts and process optimization.

The specimen will be straightened and fixed on two horizontal supports with appropriately sized copper wire in the vertical position. A burner should be placed so that the inner blue cone of the flame strikes the surface of the sample at a distance of (475 ± 5) mm from the lower edge of the upper horizontal support and the burner is at an angle of 45°. ± 2° to the vertical axis of the sample. Flame exposure time depends on cable diameter.

The EN 60332-1-2 test standard applies to the following cables:

  • Power cables - insulated conductors and cables, for example, for use in power supply
  • Control and communication cables - eg. wires, symmetrical cables and coaxial cables with metal conductors for use
  • Telecommunications, data transmission, radio frequency, video communications and signal and control equipment
  • Fiber optic cables - e.g. telecommunications, data transmission, radio frequency, video communications and signal and control equipment
