Degrees of Protection Provided by EN 60529 Enclosures (IP Code)

This standard applies to the classification for the degrees of protection provided by enclosures of electrical equipment with a rated voltage not exceeding 72,5 kV.

The purpose of this standard is to give:

• Definitions of the degrees of protection provided by enclosures of electrical equipment;
• Definitions for these degrees of protection;
• Requirements for each assignment;
• Tests to verify that the enclosure meets the requirements of this standard.

It will be the responsibility of the separate Technical Committees to decide to what extent and how it will be used in the standards of the classification, and to define the "containment" as it applies to their equipment. However, it is recommended that the tests for a particular classification do not differ from those specified in this standard.

For a particular type of equipment, a Technical Committee may set different requirements, provided that at least the same level of safety is maintained.

This standard covers only enclosures which are suitable in all other respects for the intended use specified in the relevant product standard and which, in terms of materials and workmanship, maintain the declared degrees of protection under normal use.

This standard is also applicable to empty enclosures provided that the general test requirements are met and the degree of protection chosen is suitable for the type of equipment to be protected.
