EN 60601-2-52 applies to the basic safety and basic performance of adult medical beds. This first edition cancels and replaces the first edition and amendment 60601 of EN 2-38-1. This edition constitutes a technical revision. It is the realization of many studies in harmonization and scope adjustment between EN 60601-2-52, EN 60601-2-38, EN 1970 and the third edition of EN 60601-1.
Some manufacturers have designed the bed guards to only fit a mattress depth of 12,5 cm, while others have designed the bed guards for ward use and have taken into account the depth of dynamic mattresses with a deeper cell cover.
A problem arises where care providers provide more than one mattress stock, as an incorrect mattress and mattress combination can always result. If the bed rails do not reach the required 22 cm, the patient is at risk, the bed standard is compromised and the insurance coverage becomes invalid.
In reality, many console bed rails are third-party designs and may come loose after a few hours of use. This can create a dangerous wedge-shaped gap that can lead to entrapment and suffocation.
