EN 60669 Switches for Household and Similar Fixed Electrical Installations

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of EN 60669 standard. EN 60669 standard is valid for manually operated ones. General purpose functional switches are intended for domestic and similar fixed electrical installations indoors or outdoors, only for alternating current (AC) with a rated voltage not exceeding 440 V and a rated current not exceeding 63A. For switches supplied with screwless terminals, the rated current is limited to 16A.

EN 60669 Switches for Household and Similar Fixed Electrical Installations

The switches covered in this document are designed to control, where appropriate, all of the following loads in normal use:

  • A circuit for a tungsten filament lamp load;
  • A circuit for lamp load with external ballast (eg LED, CFL, fluorescent lamp load);
  • A circuit for a self-ballasted lamp load (eg LEDi or CFLi);
  • a circuit for a substantially resistive load having a power factor of not less than 0,95;
  • A single-phase circuit for a motor load with a rated current of not less than 250 A at 750 V (3 VA) and 120 A at 540 V (4,5 VA) and a power factor of not less than 0,6. This applies to switches of not less than 10 A and which have not undergone additional testing, and momentary switches of not less than 6 A and that have not undergone additional testing.

This standard also applies to switch boxes, with the exception of mounting boxes for recessed switches. General requirements for flush-type switch boxes are given in EN 60670-1.

EN 60669 includes switches with pilot lights, electromagnetic remote switches, switches with a time delay device, combinations of switches and other functions (except switches combined with fuses), electronic switches, switches with facilities for the outlet and retention of flexible cables, isolation switches, household and switches and related accessories for use in building electronic systems also applies to switches such as firefighter keys.

Switches conforming to this standard are suitable for use at ambient temperatures normally not exceeding +40 °C, but do not average above +5 °C over a 24-hour period with the lower ambient air temperature being -35 °C. Switches conforming to this document are only suitable for incorporation into equipment in a form and location where the surrounding ambient temperature is unlikely to exceed +35 °C.

Special construction and/or additional requirements may be required where special conditions prevail, such as ships, vehicles and the like, and where, for example, explosions can occur in hazardous locations.

The EN 60669 test standard for switches for household and similar fixed electrical installations is divided into 2 separate sections and subsections:

EN 60669 Switches for Household and Similar Fixed Electrical Installations - Part 1: General Requirements

This part of the EN 60669 standard applies only to manually operated general purpose functional switches for alternating current (AC) with a rated voltage not exceeding 440 V and a rated current not exceeding 63 A.

EN 60669 Switches for Household and Similar Fixed Electrical Installations - Part 2-1: Electronic Switches

This part of the EN 60669 standard covers electronic switch and combined electronic extension units for home and similar places and similar fixed electrical installations inside or outside the building.

EN 60669 Switches for Household and Similar Fixed Electrical Installations - Part 2-2: Electromagnetic Remote Switches

This part of the EN 60669 standard covers remote control switches, hereinafter designated as RCS.

EN 60669 Switches for Household and Similar Fixed Electrical Installations - Part 2-3: Time Delayed Switches

This part of the EN 60669 standard should refer to a device consisting of hand and/or remotely operated and mechanical air, hydraulic or electrically operated devices or at one time a material, intended for fixed electrical installations in the building or outside the home and similar places. The declaration donated from the device or someone covers time-delayed keys exceeding 440 years of age and 63 A per annum.

EN 60669 Switches for Household and Similar Fixed Electrical Installations - Part 2-4: Disconnect Switches

This part of the EN 60669 standard covers manually operated, general purpose disconnect switches, with a rated voltage not exceeding 440 V and a rated current not exceeding 125 A, intended for indoor or outdoor use in fixed electrical installations in households and similar places.

EN 60669 Switches for Household and Similar Fixed Electrical Installations - Part 2-5: Switches and Related Auxiliary Equipment (HBES) Used in Houses and Building Electronic Systems

This part of the EN 60669 standard covers matters for switches used in domestic and building electronic systems with an operating voltage not exceeding 250 V aa and a rated current up to 16 A (including 16 A).

EN 60669 Switches for Household and Similar Fixed Electrical Installations - Part 2-6: Firemen's Switches for Exterior and Interior Signs and Luminaires

This part of the EN 60669 standard covers requirements for firefighter switches for exterior and interior signs and luminaires.
