EN 13471 Thermal Insulation Products for Building Equipment and Industrial Facilities - Determination of Thermal Expansion Coefficient

The standard is applicable to thermal insulation products in the temperature range of -196°C to 850°C, depending on possible temperature limitations of the test samples. It should not be used for products that have undergone a size change or other phase changes due to loss of water of hydration during the test.

Due to its small size, the test sample must be carefully selected to represent the product under test.

Changes in linear dimensions of a product as temperature changes are measured and characterized. It should be done continuously when the full curve is needed over a temperature range, or only at the two specified temperatures if only an average coefficient of linear thermal expansion is required between these temperatures.

Typical test specimens are (50 ± 1) mm in length, (10 ± 1) mm in square cross-section, or (10 ± 1) mm in diameter. Smaller or larger sizes are acceptable, but the user of the standard should be aware that test specimens that are too short may result in loss of sensitivity, while test specimens that are too long may be subject to axial temperature differences or physical deformation such as creep or elastic strain rates.
