EN 60811-504 Electrical and Fiber Optic Cables - Part 504: Low Temperature Bending Tests for Insulation and Sheaths

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of EN 60811-504 standard. This part of the EN 60811 standard gives the procedure to perform low temperature bending tests on extruded insulations and sheaths.

EN 60811-504 Electrical and Fiber Optic Cables - Part 504: Low Temperature Bending Tests for Insulation and Sheaths

The EN 60811 series specifies test methods to be used to test non-metallic materials of all types of cables. These test methods are intended to be referenced in standards for cable construction and cable materials.

Non-metallic materials are typically used for insulation, sheathing, bedding, stuffing or taping inside cables.

These test methods are considered basic and basic and have been developed and used for many years mainly for materials in all power cables. It has also been widely adopted and used for other cables, especially fiber optic cables, communication and control cables, and cables for ships and offshore applications.

This part of IEC 60811 will be used in conjunction with IEC 60811-100. All tests should be performed at least 16 hours after extrusion or crosslinking of the insulation or coating compounds. The tests will be carried out at the temperature specified in the relevant cable standard.

For insulation tests, the test is designed for insulated conductors of circular cross section with an outside diameter of up to (inclusive) 12,5 mm and sector-shaped cores where it is not possible to prepare dumbbells. For tests on sheaths, the test is designed for cables with a total diameter of up to (inclusive) 12,5 mm; and for flat cables up to and including 12,5 mm major axis size.

If required by the relevant cable standard, the test should also be carried out on larger cables. Note that equipment may need to be modified according to the cable standard. Otherwise, the insulation and sheath of larger cables must be subjected to the elongation test described in IEC 60811-505.

The actual diameter of each test piece shall be measured with vernier caliper, micrometer or measuring tape. For sector-shaped test pieces, the minor axis is taken as the diameter equivalent parameter to determine the mandrel diameter and the number of turns.
