EN 61000-4-2 Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) - Test and Measurement Techniques - Electrostatic Discharge Immunity Test

This part of EN 61000 deals with immunity requirements and test methods for electrical and electronic equipment exposed to static electricity discharges, from operators directly and personnel to adjacent objects. The purpose of this standard is to provide a common and repeatable basis for evaluating the performance of electrical and electronic equipment when subjected to electrostatic discharges. In addition, it includes electrostatic discharges that can occur from personnel to objects near vital equipment.

This standard gives specifications for testing performed in "labs" and "post-installation tests" on equipment at final installation.

This standard is not intended to specify tests to be applied to a particular device or systems. Its main purpose is to provide a general baseline reference to all relevant product committees of EN. Product committees (or equipment users and manufacturers) remain responsible for the appropriate selection of tests and the level of importance to be applied to their equipment.

It is strongly recommended that product committees or users and manufacturers consider the adoption (in their future work or revision of old standards) of the relevant immunity tests specified in this standard, so as not to hinder the task of coordination and standardization.
