EN 61284 Aerial Lines - Requirements and Tests for Fittings

It applies to the connecting parts of overhead lines with a rated voltage above 45 kV. It can also be applied to the connectors of overhead lines with lower rated voltage and similar connectors for substations.

All parts of insulator, conductor and ground wire connections will either be naturally resistant to the atmosphere. It must not corrode or be suitably protected against corrosion that may occur in transport, storage and service.

All ferrous parts that will be exposed to the atmosphere in service, except those made of suitable materials, shall be protected by stainless steel, for example by hot dip galvanizing in accordance with ISO 1461 or other standards.

Also, unless special precautions are taken, there will never be contact between metals where the electrochemical potential difference can cause galvanic corrosion and impair efficiency. This is especially true for parts of fasteners that are in direct contact.

The conductor or ground wire attached to the suspension clamps can be bare or equipped with armor bars. Suspension clamps shall be designed so that vibration effects on both the conductor and ground wire and on the clamps themselves are minimized. Clamps should be designed to prevent damage from localized pressure or damage to the conductor or ground wire.
