EN 933-2 is a European standard that specifies the method for determining the particle size distribution of aggregates. Part 2 of the standard deals specifically with the use of test sieves to determine the nominal size of openings.
Test sieves are used to separate aggregates into different size fractions. The nominal size of the openings on the test sieves is determined by measuring the width of the wires used to make the sieve meshes. The size of the openings is expressed in millimeters or micrometers.
The standard specifies a range of nominal sizes for openings, ranging from 125 mm to 20 micrometers. The nominal size of the openings is chosen based on the maximum particle size of the aggregate tested.
To determine the particle size distribution of an aggregate, the aggregate sample is placed on the top sieve of a sieve pile with progressively smaller apertures. The batch is then shaken for a certain period of time and the weight of the material retained in each sieve is measured.
The particle size distribution is then calculated by plotting the percentage of material retained in each sieve versus the size of the sieve opening. This information is used to determine the gradation of aggregate and is important for the design of concrete and asphalt mixes, as well as other building materials.
