ISO 12192 applies to all paper and board thicknesses between 280 micrometers and 580 micrometers.

It can also be used for paper and board less than 280 micrometers thick, but these results are a reflection of the paper's stiffness rather than its compressive strength.

For paper and board with a thickness exceeding 580 micrometers, it may not be possible to bend them to the periphery without breaking the structure.

Crush resistance depends on the design of the containers and the in-plane crush resistance of the containers. The in-plane crush strength of these components was measured by the ring crush test.
