EN 62196-1 Conductive Charging of Electric Vehicles - Part 1: General Requirements

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of EN 62196-1 standard. This part of the EN 62196 standard is applicable to plugs, sockets, vehicle connectors, vehicle jacks and cable assemblies for electric vehicles, referred to herein as accessories, and is intended for use in conductive charging systems containing rated operation and control means.

EN 62196-1 Conductive Charging of Electric Vehicles - Part 1: General Requirements

EN 62196-1 applies to 690V AC 50 Hz to 60 Hz sockets with a rated current not exceeding 250 A and 400 V DC at a rated current not exceeding 1500 A. These accessories are intended to be installed by trained or qualified persons. These accessories and cable assemblies are designed for use in circuits operating at different voltages and frequencies and may contain extra-low voltage and communication signals.

These accessories and cable assemblies must be used at an ambient temperature of –30 °C to +50 °C. Other requirements may apply in some countries. These accessories are intended to be connected only to cables with copper or copper alloy conductors. The accessories covered in this part of EN 62196 are for use in certain charging modes of electric vehicles.

This part of EN 62196 does not apply to standardized accessories used in charging systems where the use of such accessories made according to the requirements of other standards is permitted (eg in mode 1 and mode 2). Such standardized accessories can be used for states (mode and state) defined in EN 61851-1.

This part of EN 62196 can be used as a guide for accessories with fewer contacts and lower ratings for use with light duty vehicles.

Accessories shall be designed and manufactured in such a way as to ensure their reliable performance in normal use and to minimize the risk of danger to the user or the environment. Compliance is checked by meeting all relevant requirements and specified tests. Accessories must be designed and constructed in such a way that it is not possible to make a cable extension kit. The plug and vehicle connector will not be compatible. Compliance is checked by a manual test.

The tests performed according to this standard are type tests. If a part of an accessory has previously passed tests for a certain degree of severity, the relevant type tests should not be repeated unless the severity is greater. Unless otherwise stated, samples are tested as delivered and under normal conditions of use at ambient temperature (20 ± 5) °C; The tests are done at the rated frequency. Unless otherwise stated, the tests are carried out in the order of the clauses of this standard.

Accessories are considered to comply with this standard if no specimen fails in all appropriate series of tests. If a sample fails a test, that test and any previous ones that may have affected the test result are repeated on another set of three samples, all of which must then pass the repeated tests.
