EN 646 Determination of Color Fastness of Paper and Cardboard, Painted Paper and Cardboard Intended to Contact with Foodstuffs

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of EN 646 testing. This standard describes procedures for testing dyed paper and paperboard intended to come into contact with foodstuffs. Some procedures are given based on the foreseeable use of the material.

Visual assessment against gray scale provides grading of bleeding. For samples with significantly different sides, a migration from one glass fiber to the other may occur, resulting in a misinterpretation of the fastness of one side.

It is recommended to check these samples using the large sampling procedure to avoid cross-contamination of the glass fiber during the migration procedure. This procedure can also be used if a lower detection limit is required.

A sample is contacted with fiberglass papers saturated with a test liquid and placed under load for a specified time and temperature. Staining of fiberglass paper is evaluated against the gray scale. The test fluids used are distilled or deionized water, diluted acetic acid, alkaline salt solution and olive oil, depending on the type of contact expected.

For grading, a distinction is made between different grades of assessment: First grade means poor fastness; grade five means good fastness. The gray scale grade most similar to stained glass paper, starting from 4/5, is given as the evaluation grade of the tested paper. The choice between 5 and 4/5 is also based on the most similar class.

If only one side of the paper or cardboard comes into contact with foodstuffs (for example, food packaging) and it is known which side is facing the food, only this side will be evaluated.
