EN 856 Rubber Hoses and Hose Assemblies - Rubber Covered Spiral Wire Reinforced Hydraulic Type

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of EN 856 standard. The EN 856 standard specifies requirements for four types of rubber lined spiral wire reinforced hydraulic hoses and hose assemblies with nominal inside diameters from 6 to 51: Types 4SP, 4SH, R12 and R13. This European Standard does not contain requirements for end fittings. Limited by the performance of hoses and hose assemblies.

All are suitable for use with:

  • HFD R at temperatures ranging from -4 °C to +4 °C for types 40SP and 40SH and -100; Hydraulic fluids conforming to ISO 6743 4 except HFD S and HFD T °C to +12 °C for types R13 and R120;
  • Water-based fluids at temperatures ranging from -40 °C to 70 °C;
  • Water liquids at temperatures ranging from 0 °C to 70 °C.

Hoses are not suitable for use with castor oil-based or ester-based fluids. Hoses and hose assemblies may not be operated outside the limits of this standard. Hydraulic hose requirements for underground mining are standardized in a separate standard.

Hoses shall consist of an oil and water resistant synthetic rubber liner, spiral layers of steel wire wound in alternating directions and an oil and weather resistant synthetic rubber cap. Each spiral wire layer will be separated by an insulating synthetic rubber layer. Four types of hoses are specified:

  • Type 4SP – spiral medium pressure hose with 4 steel wires;
  • Type 4SH – spiral extra high pressure hose with 4 steel wires;
  • Type R12 – 4 steel wire spiral heavy duty high temperature hose – medium pressure rating;
  • Type R13 – multiple steel wire spiral heavy duty high temperature hose – high pressure rating.

Hose assemblies shall only be manufactured with hose fittings whose functionality has been verified. When measured according to EN ISO 4671, the diameters of the hoses must correspond to the values ​​given.
