This standard specifies a method for determining the resistance of wood coatings to artificial weathering performed in an apparatus equipped with fluorescent UV lamps, condensation and water spray devices.
Coatings from paints, varnishes and similar materials are etched in the laboratory to accelerate aging processes (caused by temperature, wetness and irradiation) that occur during natural weathering. In general, a simple rate of acceleration between aging during artificial and natural wear cannot be expected due to influencing factors that have different effects depending on the nature of the coating and the substrate. Predictable relationships can only be expected if the influence of important parameters (spectral distribution of radiation in the photochemically relevant range, temperature of the sample, type of wetting, relative humidity of the wetting cycle) on the coating is known.
In addition, acceleration of coating chemistry may lead to alternative degradation pathways. However, unlike natural weather conditions, tests in the laboratory can be controlled by the operator and therefore the results are more reproducible.
Artificial etching of coatings using fluorescent UV lamps, condensation or water spray is performed to produce a given radiant exposure or a mutually agreed total number of working hours based on a particular property or a particular degree of variation in properties. The properties of exposed coatings are compared with those of non-exposed coatings prepared from the same coating materials or coatings with known degradation properties under the same conditions.
