This standard specifies the determination of the overall specific outer and inner surface area of ​​dispersed (e.g. nano-powders) or porous solids by measuring the amount of gas physically adsorbed according to the Brunauer, Emmett and Teller (BET) method. It takes into account the 1984 and 1994 recommendations of the International Union of Fundamental and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC).

The BET method is only applicable to type II (dispersed, non-porous or macroporous solids) and type IV (mesoporous solids, pore diameter between 2 nm and 50 nm) adsorption isotherms. Inaccessible pores are not detected. The BET method cannot be reliably applied to solids absorbing the measuring gas.

The specific surface area is a crucial parameter for optimizing the use of mesoporous and macroporous materials. In addition, it also optimizes microporous materials in many applications. However, due to the complex nature of porous materials, no single experimental technique can be expected to provide an assessment of "absolute" surface area.

Despite well-known limitations, the Brunauer, Emmett, and Teller (BET) method continues to be widely used in the evaluation of specific surface areas of porous materials. Therefore, the specific surface area obtained by applying the BET method from microporous solids to adsorption isotherms does not reflect the true inner surface area. It is considered a type of characteristic or equivalent BET field.
