EN ISO 11117 Gas Cylinders - Valve Protection Caps and Housings - Design, Construction and Tests

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of EN ISO 7686 standard. The EN ISO 11117 standard specifies requirements for valve protection caps and valve guards used in cylinders for liquefied, dissolved or compressed gases.

EN ISO 11117 Gas Cylinders - Valve Protection Caps and Housings - Design, Construction and Tests

Valve protection caps and valve guards are some of the options available to protect cylinder valves during shipping, including valves with integrated pressure regulators (VIPRs).

This document applies to valve cover caps and valve housings that naturally provide the primary protection of a cylinder valve. It can also be used to test other equipment (eg handling devices) attached to cylinder packages, even where the cylinder valve is resistant to damage without releasing the contents.

This standard does not cover protection devices for cylinders with a water capacity of 5-1 or less, and cylinders where the protection device is fixed to the cylinder by means of welded or brazed lugs, or directly welded or brazed to the cylinder. This document does not cover valve protection for breathing apparatus cylinders.

Small tubes (eg medical tubes) are usually transported in an outer packaging (eg pallet) to meet shipping regulations. This standard does not specify requirements that may be required to enable the valve protection device to be used to lift the cylinder.

This International Standard covers devices for the protection of gas cylinder valves where such protection is required, for example where the valve cannot meet the impact test requirements of the applicable valve standard to allow safe handling, handling and storage without such protection.

This International Standard specifies requirements for basic dimensions, fitment, and drop test procedure to verify that adequate valve protection is provided should a cylinder topple over from its base.

EN ISO 11117 General Requirements

The cap shall be of sufficient strength to protect the valve during handling and shipping. It must be securely fastened to the cylinder by screw thread or other suitable means. Precautions should be taken for assisted insertion or removal of the head, eg a hexagonal section.

Unless otherwise specified, ventilation holes should be provided in the cover, for example, it can be used with opposing ventilation holes in diameter of 10 mm. Two diametrically opposite vents shall be provided, each with a minimum diameter of 10 mm. (When the cap has no vent, the cylinder's valve outlet passage must be blocked to prevent leakage and subsequent pressure build-up in the cap.)
