If the wavelength of the free bending waves of the lowest frequency under consideration is less than half of the minimum dimensions of the sample, a test aperture with a smaller area may be used. However, the smaller the sample, the more sensitive the results will be to edge constraint conditions and local variations in sound fields.
The apparent sound attenuation index of the infill wall including all side members, calculated using the area of the test opening, must be at least 6 dB higher than the sound attenuation index of the test sample at any frequency. This can be determined by measuring the apparent sound reduction index with significantly reduced transmission through the test sample.
The background noise level in the intake chamber should be low enough to allow measurement of transmitted impact sound, given the characteristics of the tapping machine and the sound insulation of the sample for which the test facility is intended. Airborne sound insulation between the reception room and the source room must be high enough so that the sound field measured in the reception room is only that produced by the impact excitation of the floor under test.
