EUROLAB, together with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of EN ISO 11664-2 testing. This International standard specifies two illuminators for use in colorimetry.
The illuminators defined in this standard are as follows:
CIE standard illuminant A: This is intended to represent typical household tungsten filament lighting. The relative spectral power distribution is that of a Planckian radiator at a temperature of about 2.856 K. CIE standard illuminant A should be used in all colorimetry applications where incandescent lighting is used, unless there are specific reasons to use a different illuminator.
CIE standard illuminator D65: This is intended to represent average daylight and has an associated color temperature of about 6.500 K. The CIE standard illuminator D65 should be used in all colorimetric calculations requiring representative daylight unless there are special reasons to use a different illuminator. Variations in the relative spectral power distribution of daylight are known to occur as a function of season, time of day, and geographic location, particularly in the ultraviolet spectral region. However, the CIE standard illuminant D65 should be used until additional information is available on these variations.
The term "illuminating" refers to a defined spectral power distribution that is not necessarily provided by an achievable or artificial source. Illuminators are used in colorimetry to calculate the tristimulus values of reflected or transmitted object colors under certain lighting conditions.
CIE also defined illuminant C and other illuminants D. These illuminators are disclosed in publication CIE 15, but do not have primary CIE standards status conforming to the CIE standard illuminants A and D65 described in this International standard. It is recommended, wherever possible, to use one of the two CIE standard illuminators defined in this International standard. This will greatly facilitate the comparison of published results.
