EN ISO 12572 Hygrothermal Performance of Building Materials and Products - Determination of Water Vapor Permeability Properties

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of EN ISO 12572 standard. The EN ISO 12572 standard specifies a method based on container tests to determine the water vapor permeability of building products and water vapor permeability of building materials under isothermal conditions. Different sets of test conditions are specified.

EN ISO 12572 Hygrothermal Performance of Building Materials and Products - Determination of Water Vapor Permeability Properties

The general principles apply to all hygroscopic and non-hygroscopic building materials and products, including insulating materials and coatings and integral coatings. The appendices detail the appropriate test methods for different types of materials.

Results obtained with this method are suitable for inclusion in design purposes, production control, and product specifications.

The test sample is sealed to the open side of a test beaker containing a desiccant (dry cup) or an aqueous saturated solution (wet cup). The assembly is then placed in a temperature and humidity controlled test chamber. Due to the different partial vapor pressure between the test vessel and the chamber, a steam flow occurs through the permeable samples. Periodic weighings of the device are made to determine the steady state water vapor transmission rate.

Test samples should be representative of the product. If the product has natural coatings or integrated coatings, these may be included in the test sample, but these should be removed if the permeability of the core material is intended.

If the coatings are different on the two sides, samples should be tested with steam flow in the intended use direction. If the flow direction is unknown, duplicate samples should be prepared and tests performed for each flow direction. Unless the product is tested isotropically, test specimens should be cut with the parallel faces perpendicular to the steam flow direction of the product in use.
