EN ISO 13477 is applicable to evaluating the performance of thermoplastic pipes designed for gas or liquid supply. In the latter case, air may also be present in the pipe.

This test method was developed using single-layer thermoplastic pipes. Its applicability to multilayer pipes has not yet been fully validated and is being studied.

A section of thermoplastic test tube of specified length, conditioned to a specified test temperature and containing a liquid at a specified test pressure, is subjected to an impact near one end designed to initiate a rapidly propagating longitudinal crack. The crack initiation process itself is designed to disturb the test tube as little as possible.

The fluid or mixture of fluids is the same as that used in the intended application or is a substitute fluid that gives equivalent results. The temperature of the fluid is between the test temperature and the laboratory temperature.
