EN ISO 6946 Building Components and Structural Elements - Thermal Resistance and Thermal Permeability - Calculation Methods

EN ISO 6946 provides a method for calculating the thermal resistance and thermal transmittance of building components and structural elements, excluding doors, windows and other glazed units, curtain walls, components involving heat transfer to the ground, and components through which air passes.

EN ISO 6946 Building Components and Structural Elements - Thermal Resistance and Thermal Permeability - Calculation Methods

The calculation method is based on the appropriate design thermal conductivities or design thermal resistances of materials and products for the respective application.

EN ISO 6946 also provides an approximate method that can be used for elements containing inhomogeneous layers, including the effect of metal fasteners. Other situations where the insulation is bridged with metal are outside the scope of this standard.

The principle of the calculation method is as follows:

  • To obtain the thermal resistance of each thermally homogeneous part of the component;
  • Combining these individual resistors to get the overall thermal resistance of the component, including the effect of surface resistors.
