ISO 1138 Standard Test for Determination of Rubber Compound Components, Carbon Black, Sulfur Content

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ISO 1138 standard. It introduces two methods for determining the total sulfur content in all types of carbon black for use in the rubber industry.

ISO 1138 Standard Test for Determination of Rubber Compound Components, Carbon Black, Sulfur Content

  • Method A, using an oxygen bomb calorimeter;
  • Method B, using an incinerator.

The total sulfur content, expressed as a percent by mass, is given by a formula. For safety considerations and test accuracy, it is preferable to use automated systems. Therefore, Method B is the preferred method. Conventional chemical analysis (Method A) is acceptable if automated equipment is not available.

A weighed test portion of dried carbon black is heated in a stream of oxygen in an incinerator at a temperature of 1 °C. Sulfur compounds developed from the test portion are collected in a titer flask containing hydrochloric acid solution. These compounds are titrated with standard volumetric potassium iodate-potassium iodide solution. The sulfur percentage is calculated.
