EN ISO 16190 Test Standard for Chamfers in Shoes

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of EN ISO 16190 standard. It is a test method for the determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in shoe materials.

PAHs are often not added intentionally to the manufacturing process and are often found as contaminants in rubber and pigments such as carbon black. PAHs are considered carcinogenic and genotoxic.

Therefore, many countries have restricted PAHs in articles such as shoes, for example in the European Union (EU), PAHs are restricted under REACH Annex XVII in clothing as well as consumer products containing rubber or plastic components in direct contact with the skin.

This new standard cancels and replaces the Technical Specification. ISO 16190 now complies with EN 17132 and AfPS GS PAK in terms of extraction procedure. The most significant change compared to ISO/TS 16190 is the conversion of the extraction solvent from n-hexane to toluene. This will likely lead to more comparable results as extraction is a crucial step and toluene is the better extraction solvent for PAHs in plastics.
