EN 314-2 Plywood - Bonding Quality - Test for Requirements

Suitable test methods are specified in EN 314-1. The main features considered are: mechanical properties such as shear strength and assessment of wood fracture.

Test pieces should be placed well separated in a suitable rack or wire basket. During soaking, each test piece should remain completely submerged in water.

The shear test pieces shall be placed in the middle of the clamping devices so that the load can be transmitted from the test machine via the ends of the test pieces to the shear area without any transverse load. If slippage occurs, it is only allowed at the initial stage of loading. This compression is done on the faces.

Failure should normally occur in wood or glue lines between saw cuts, ie within the cut test area. When cross grain fracture occurs outside the test area or within 50% or more of a faceplate surface, the result should be rejected and the test repeated using the procedure with a cut length of 25mm.
