EN ISO 17225-1 Solid Biofuels - Fuel Properties and Classes - General Requirements

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of EN ISO 17225-1 standard. This part of the EN ISO 17225 standard specifies fuel quality classes and properties for solid biofuels of raw and processed materials originating from forestry and arboriculture, agriculture and horticulture, and aquaculture.

EN ISO 17225-1 Solid Biofuels - Fuel Properties and Classes - General Requirements

Chemically treated material may not contain higher levels of halogenated organic compounds or heavy metals than typical pure material values or typical values of the country of origin. It includes raw and processed material, woody, herbaceous, fruit, aquatic biomass and biodegradable waste from the above sectors.

The purpose of the ISO 17225 series is to provide clear and unambiguous classification principles for solid biofuels and to serve as a tool to enable efficient trading of biofuels, and to serve as a tool for communication with equipment manufacturers as well as good understanding between seller and buyer. It will also facilitate authorization permit procedures and reporting.

The ISO 17225 series is made for all stakeholders. Solid biomass includes organic, non-fossil material of biological origin that can be used as a fuel for heat and electricity generation.

The bioenergy use chain from biomass sources to biofuel production and end use of bioenergy is summarized. Although biomass can be used for power generation, it can be used in construction, furniture, packaging, paper products, etc. It has many other primary uses (non-fuel) as a raw material for

The classifications given in this International Standard are provided for the purpose of biomass use. It is used as a solid biofuel and therefore unrelated to all other uses.

Although these product standards can be obtained separately, they require a general understanding of the standards that are based on and support ISO 17225-1. It is recommended to purchase and use ISO 17225-1 with these standards.

Rated in these product standards means that solid biofuel is used either in domestic and commercial applications such as small commercial and public sector buildings, or in industrial applications that require the use of fuels of certain quality (properties) expressed by quality classes such as A1.

The classification is based on the biofuel source. The main groups of origin-based solid biofuels in the hierarchical classification system are:

  • Woody biomass - biomass obtained from trees, bushes and shrubs.
  • Herbaceous biomass - obtained from plants that have a non-woody stem and die at the end of the growing season.
  • Fruit biomass - biomass obtained from the seed or seed-bearing parts of a plant.
  • Aquatic biomass - consists of hydrophytic plants or hydrophytes, which are plants adapted to live in or in aquatic environments.
