EN ISO 2814 Paints and Varnishes — Comparison of Contrast Ratio (Hiding Power) of Paints of the Same Type and Color

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of EN ISO 2814 standard. This International Standard specifies the standard method to be used for comparing the contrast ratios of paint films in white or ligth colours, given by applying a refelctance factor greater than 40% to black and white surfaces in approximately equal wet film thickness, after drying at normal air temperature.

EN ISO 2814 Paints and Varnishes — Comparison of Contrast Ratio (Hiding Power) of Paints of the Same Type and Color

The selected wet film thickness, about 50 µm, corresponds to a spreading rate of about 20 m2 /l. The method is unsatisfactory as an absolute method for determining hiding power, as different operators using the same film coating device obtain films that differ in thickness.

Cards, black and white substrate cards, should be stored at single thickness, under test conditions, at 23 ± 2 °C and 50% ± 5% relative humidity, at least 24 hours prior to coating and should always be on hand. edges to prevent fingerprints on areas to be coated. The card will be crafted to cover one of the following:

Fix one end to a flat glass plate at least 6 mm thick with clips or adhesive tape, or using a vacuum suction plate that will be flat within ± 2 µm.

Polyester Film

The polyester film, at least 6 mm thick, will be prepared for coating by first spreading it on a flat glass plate moistened with a few drops of white spirit, just enough to hold the film by surface tension. Care should be taken that no liquid wets the upper surface of the film and that no air bubbles remain under the film.

Immediately prior to application, the paint should be thoroughly mixed by stirring vigorously, being careful not to create air bubbles to break up any thixotropic structure. About 2 ml of paint is applied in a line to one end of the card or polyester film and immediately spread by pulling it down with the applicator block. A firm pressure is provided on the block to be moved at a speed of about 100 mm/s. While the paint dries, the coated card or polyester film should be protected horizontally, preferably by taping the edges to a flat surface. At least three draws were prepared from each test dye.
