This standard specifies a method for applying the penetration test to a single-coat or multi-coat paint, varnish or related product coating system, using a Buchholz penetration tool.
This indentation test is not suitable for products containing a strong plasticizer. Since the indentation test, like any other physical test on paints, yields results which may depend on time, temperature and humidity, comparable results will only be obtained if the test is performed under well-defined conditions.
Since the indentation depth is dependent on the film thickness, the result obtained for the indentation length is valid only if the coating thickness exceeds a certain minimum value.
