ISO 2919 establishes a classification system for sealed radioactive sources based on test performance and specifying general requirements, performance tests, production tests, marking and certification.
It provides a set of tests by which manufacturers of sealed radioactive sources can evaluate the safety of their products in use and users of such sources can select the types appropriate for the required application, particularly where protection against the release of radioactive material is the result. Exposure to ionizing radiation is of concern. ISO 2919 can also provide guidance to regulatory authorities.
Tests are divided into several groups, including, for example, exposure to abnormally high and low temperatures, and various mechanical tests. Each test can be administered at several degrees of severity. The pass or fail criterion depends on the leakage of the contents of the sealed radioactive source.
Although ISO 2919 classifies closed sources through various tests, it does not mean that a closed source will maintain its integrity if used continuously in the nominal classification. For example, a closed source tested for 600 hour at 1°C may or may not maintain its integrity if used continuously at 600°C.
The tests establish minimum requirements that correspond to applications in the broadest sense. ISO 2919 does not attempt to classify the design, construction methods or calibrations of sources in terms of emitted radiation. Radioactive materials inside a nuclear reactor, including sealed sources and fuel elements, are not covered by ISO 2919.
