EN ISO 3385 Flexible Cellular Polymeric Materials - Determination of Fatigue by Constant Load Impact

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of EN ISO 3385 standard. International Standard EN ISO 3385 specifies a method for determining the loss of thickness and stiffness of flexible cellular materials intended for use in load bearing applications such as flooring. It provides a tool to evaluate the service performance of flexible cellular materials based on rubber latex or polyurethane used in load bearing flooring.

The method is applicable to both standard sized test pieces cut from flooring material and shaped components. The measured loss in thickness and loss in hardness are related to, but not necessarily the same as, losses likely to occur in service. EN ISO 3385 is not intended to serve as a detailed engineering design specification for fatigue apparatus.

Repeated indentation of a test piece by an indentor whose area is smaller than the test piece, keeping the maximum load reached during each cycle within specified limits. The test is performed on a properly ventilated flat sheet that can fully support the test piece and is properly ventilated with holes about 20mm in diameter spaced about 6mm apart to allow air to escape from the test piece.

Machine Type A, in its simplest form, consists of the mechanism, a crank drive and a suspended weight. The weight must be supported throughout the loading cycle, except for the portion of the stroke where the mount and plate are closest together. At this point, the full force of the indentor will be supported by the test piece; this will not be for more than 10% of the full machine cycle. The movable plate shall be equipped with suitable means to locate the test piece and to prevent its lateral movement during the test.

Machine Type B, a fully controlled device driven by an electro-, pneumatic or hydraulic mechanism, equipped with a load cell and means to provide the required indentation frequency and peak force. It is not meant to exclude other machines that fit the basic requirements.
