This part of the International Standard EN ISO 3386 specifies a method for determining the compressive stress-strain properties of flexible cellular polymeric materials with a density greater than 250 kg/m³. The compressive stress-strain property is a measure of the material's load-bearing properties, though not necessarily a long-term load-carrying capacity.

The compressive stress-strain characteristic differs from the indentation stiffness properties (as determined according to ISO 2439), which are known to be affected by the thickness and tensile properties of the flexible cellular material tested, the shape of the compression member and the tensile properties.

This part of ISO 3386 is a general method for testing denser resilient cellular materials (i.e. expanded cellular rubbers) and measurements are made at one of multiple points on the steep rising portion of the stress-strain curve. The shape factor of the test piece is important and comparative test results can only be obtained on test pieces with the same shape factor.

For comparison purposes, the method can be used for material with a density of 150 kg/m³ or more.
