EN ISO 4624 Paints and Varnishes - Tensile Test for Adhesion

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of EN ISO 4624 standard. This International Standard describes methods for determining adhesion by performing a tensile test on a single coating or a multi-coat paint, varnish or related product system.

EN ISO 4624 Paints and Varnishes - Tensile Test for Adhesion

These test methods have been found useful in comparing the adhesion behavior of different coatings. It is most useful in providing relative ratings for a range of coated panels that exhibit significant differences in adhesion.

The test can be performed using a wide variety of substrates. Depending on whether the substrate deforms, for example, thin metal, plastic and wood, or hard, for example thick concrete and metal plates, different procedures are given: For special purposes, the coating can be applied directly to the face of a test car.

EN ISO 4624 Test Practice

The tested product or system is applied in uniform thinking to flat panels with a uniform surface texture.

After drying/curing the coating system, the dollys are bonded directly to the surface of the coated, cured panel using an adhesive.

After the adhesive has cured, the bonded dolly assemblies are placed in a suitable tensile tester. The assembled assemblies are subjected to a controlled tensile test (tensile test) and the force required to break the coating/substrate bond is measured.

The test result is the tensile stress required to break the weakest interface (wear failure) or weakest component (cohesion failure) of the test assembly. Mixed adhesive/cohesion failures can also occur.

The tensile tester suitable for performing the chosen procedure should be used with the test set set to fail within 90 s.
