EN ISO 597-2 Furniture - Evaluation of Flammability of Mattresses and Upholstered Bed Bases

This European Standard specifies a test method for assessing the flammability of mattresses, upholstered bed bases when exposed to a gas flame as an ignition source. Air bearings and water bearings are excluded from this standard.

According to this standard, ignition criteria are determined as follows:

• Any test setup that exhibits increased burning behavior so that it is unsafe to continue the test;
• Any test assembly that burns until it is substantially consumed during the test period;
• Any test apparatus that burns to its full thickness during the test period;
• Any test assembly lit one hour after the application of the ignition source;
• Any test setup that shows evidence of burning at the final inspection.

The test method presented in the EN ISO 597-2 standard is designed to test the flammability of bedding components such as blankets, duvets, bedspreads and pillows, including thin, light mattresses used on mattresses.
