EN ISO 62 Plastics - Determination of Water Absorption

The EN ISO 62 standard, developed by the International Standards Organization (ISO), defines a test method for determining the moisture absorption properties of flat or curved shaped solid plastics in the thickness direction.

EN ISO 62 Plastics - Determination of Water Absorption

This test method is for determining the amount of water absorbed by plastic samples of defined sizes when immersed in water under controlled conditions or when exposed to moist air. This test method is applicable to homogeneous materials and composites with reinforced polymer matrix tested below glass transition temperatures.

Ideally, the best comparison of water absorption properties or diffusion coefficients of materials should be made using only the equilibrium moisture content of plastics exposed to the same conditions.

Alternatively, the water absorption of plastic samples of defined sizes exposed to immersion or moisture under controlled conditions is used to compare different batches of the same material or for quality control testing of a particular material. For this type of comparison, all test specimens should have the same dimensions and have the same physical properties as closely as possible. Therefore, the results from such tests are not used to compare the water absorption properties of different types of plastics. Simultaneous tests should be performed for more reliable results.

The results obtained using the test methods defined in the EN ISO 62 standard are applicable to most plastics, but not to cellular plastics, granules or powders that show additional absorption and capillary effects. The tests described for determining the diffusion coefficient may not be applicable to all plastics. For example, plastics that do not retain their shape when immersed in boiling water should not be compared using method 2.

In fact, plastics exposed to water are exposed to different effects. For example,

  • Dimensional changes due to absorption of water
  • Extraction of water-soluble components
  • Changes in other features

However, exposure to moisture, immersion, and exposure to boiling water cause markedly different material responses.

Among the services provided by our organization within the framework of material testing services, there are also EN ISO 62 standard tests.
