Before testing, the test area must be completely glazed according to the manufacturing drawings and job specifications. If the glass installation is not completed, the test results will not be accurate.
The test area (typically 9.3 square meters) should contain at least two full field of view and two full borders, including perimeter caulking, typical joints, frame intersections and, where applicable, an intermediate vertical member and an intermediate horizontal member.
During testing, it is imperative to remove any interior cladding wall material to gain visual access to inspect water penetration.
During testing, the test area should be divided into 1.5 meter sections of framing and attachment and evaluated. The nozzle of the hose should be held at a distance of 305 mm from the test position and slowly moved back and forth in the test section and held there for 5 minutes, maintaining a right angle to the plane of the wall.
While testing, an observer should be on the inside of the wall to check for water leaks and mark where the leak is. If no leaks are found, AAMA 501.2-03 testing can proceed to the next section of the test area.
If there is a leak and the source cannot be detected, all joints, gaskets and frames should be tightly sealed with waterproof adhesive masking tape. Then, starting at the bottom of the test area, the tape is removed from the lowest horizontal frame and subjected to nozzle spray. Continue moving through the test area to identify the source of the leak.
