EN ISO 898-1 Mechanical Properties of Carbon Steel and Alloy Steel Fasteners - Bolts, Screws and Studs with Property Classes - Coarse Thread and Fine Pitch Thread

The ISO 898-1 standard, developed by the International Standards Organization (ISO), describes the mechanical and physical properties of bolts, screws and studs made of carbon steel and alloy steel.

These tests are carried out at an ambient temperature of 10 to 35 degrees and certain fasteners such as bolts, screws and studs that meet the standard's requirements are evaluated. If the tests are carried out at higher or lower temperatures, the test sample may not retain its mechanical and physical properties.

The general characteristics of bolts, screws and studs to which this standard is applied are as follows:

• Manufactured from carbon steel or alloy steel;
• Having the metric screw thread described in the ISO 68-1 standard;
• Having certain coarse and fine screw threads;
• Diameter and slope combinations are in accordance with ISO 261 and ISO 262 standards;
• Thread tolerances in accordance with ISO 965-1, ISO 965-2 and ISO 965-4 standards.

This standard does not apply to set screws and similar threaded fasteners that are not under tension. In addition, the standard does not specify requirements for properties such as weldability, corrosion resistance, resistance to shear stresses, torque and clamp force performance, and fatigue resistance.

In short, bolts, screws and studs must meet all applicable mechanical and physical properties, at ambient temperature, regardless of what tests are performed during production or final inspection.
