EN ISO 9073-12 Textiles - Test Methods for Nonwovens - Demand Absorbency

EN ISO 9073-12 describes a method for evaluating the absorbency of fabrics when one side is in contact with a liquid and the fabric is under mechanical pressure. This test is designed to allow comparison of absorbent materials such as non-woven fabrics and is not intended to simulate the use conditions of finished products.

The method measures the demand absorbency of a fabric under constant mechanical pressure. The test piece is placed on a specific porous plate connected by a siphon to a liquid reservoir. The level in the chamber is set below the upper surface of the porous plate. Demand absorbency is measured in terms of change in reservoir mass over time.

If the data acquisition system, which records the mass change of the reservoir against time, is a digital system, it will be able to take readings at least four times per second. The hydrophobic foam is adhered to the base of the cylindrical weight using hydrophobic double-sided tapes so that the foam can be replaced from time to time.
