EN ISO 9117-1 Paints and Varnishes - Drying Tests - Part 1: Determination of Full Curing Condition and Full Drying Time

This part of the standard specifies a test method for determining, under standard conditions, whether a single coat or multiple coat paint, varnish or related material system has reached its full drying state after a specified drying time.

The test procedure can also be used to determine the time it takes to reach this state.

The most important reason for the paint not drying or drying late is the low air temperature. Also, if the smell of bad paint does not go away, it can create the perception that the paint has not dried.

Except for effect and special paints, while applying paints, the second coat is not applied before the first coat dries. Making the second coat before the first coat dries not only delays the drying of the paint, but also reduces its sealing property.

As with primers and paints, the drying time of varnish also varies depending on the type of varnish. In addition, ambient temperature also affects the drying time of the varnish.

A coat of paint or varnish of the agreed thickness is applied to a substrate and allowed to dry under specified conditions. The completeness of the cure throughout the coating is determined by examining the surface of the coating after application of a load applied to a given surface area and then rotating the load applying face at 90°C.
