The knots are smaller and less frequent than the knots of a duck.
Duck feathers have 1-6 knots (usually 3 knots) near the tip of the barbul. These knots are relatively large compared to goose knots. The distance between duck knots is very short. Forks are usually located beyond the furthest duck knot.
Forks are not normally used in type identification. However, "Japanese Clues to Species" can be used to differentiate between Duck and Goose using prongs and other identifying markings.
Blackbirds, especially chickens, have a series of evenly spaced light knots or swellings that give the barbule the appearance of bamboo. The ridges or knots of blackbirds extend almost the entire distance of the barb.
