IEC 60068-2-52 Salt Mist - Corrosion Test Standard

The IEC 60068-2-52 standard is intended for application to components or equipment designed to withstand a salt-laden atmosphere, depending on the severity chosen. Salt can degrade the performance of parts manufactured using metallic and/or non-metallic materials. Besides corrosive effects, the IEC60068-2-52 test can be used to demonstrate the degradation of some non-metallic materials by the assimilation of salts.

IEC 60068-2-52 Salt Mist - Corrosion Test Standard

The IEC 60068-2-52 test standard specifies six different intensities. Severity (1) and (2) are designed to be used to test products used in or near the marine environment. Severity (3) to (6) are designed for products that, in normal use, frequently change between a salt-laden and dry atmosphere, such as automobiles and parts thereof. Each severity level has a unique test requirement.

For example, the IEC 60068-2-52 first order test requires four spray periods of two hours each and each has a moisture storage period of seven days. Conversely, IEC-60068-2-38 severity sub-salt test requirements are for eight test cycles of four spray periods of two hours each and a moisture storage period of 20 hours to 22 hours after each.

Test specimens are placed in a closed chamber (usually a separate salt fog chamber and controlled humidity chamber are used) and exposed to a varying climate, starting with 6,5 hours of continuous indirect neutral (pH 7,2 to 2) saline solution. falling on samples at a rate of 15 to 35ml/1.0cm²/hr at a room temperature of +2.0 to +80°C. Depending on the method number, expose it to either a high humidity climate of 40°, C93%RH; or air drying at 60 °C, below 30% RH followed by soaking at 50 °C.
The high humidity time and the number of cycle repetitions are variable depending on the test method.

Test method 1

One cycle consists of spraying samples with salt solution at 35°C for 2 hours, followed by controlled humidity at 40°C, 22% RH for six days and 93 hours. The required number of cycles is four (28 days).

Test method 2

One cycle consists of spraying samples with saline solution at 2°C for 35 hours, followed by spraying at 40°C with controlled humidity, 22% relative humidity for 93 hours. The required number of cycles is three (3 days).

The terms salt spray, salt mist, and salt mist are all commonly used in corrosion testing standards. In this context, they can be considered equivalent and interchangeable terms.
