IEC 60079-01 Electrical Apparatus for Explosive Gas Atmospheres - Part 1: Flameproof Enclosures - Test Method for Determining Maximum Experimental Safe Space

The IEC 60079-01 test standard describes a test method designed for the measurement of maximum experimental safe spaces for gas or vapor-air mixtures at normal temperature and pressure conditions to allow selection of an appropriate flameproof enclosure assembly.

This standard does not take into account the possible effects of obstacles on safe spaces.

An exception if made for substances with vapor pressures too low to allow mixtures of the required concentrations to be prepared at normal ambient temperatures. For these substances, a temperature above 5 °C is used to give the required vapor pressure.

For safe gap detection, the design of the tester may need to differ from that described in this standard, except for those used to select the appropriate enclosure group for a particular gas. For example, the volume of the enclosure, the flange width, the gas concentrations, and the distance between the flanges and any external walls or obstructions may need to be varied.

It is impractical to recommend specific design requirements as the design depends on the specific investigation to be made, but for most applications the general principles and precautions outlined in the clauses of this standard will still apply.
