IEC 60156 specifies the method for determining the dielectric breakdown voltage of insulating fluids at the power frequency.

The test procedure is performed in a specific apparatus where the oil sample is exposed to an increasing AC electric field until failure occurs. The method is applicable to all types of insulating fluids with a nominal viscosity of up to 40 mm350/s at 2 °C.

It is suitable both for acceptance tests during the delivery of unused liquids and for determining the condition of samples taken during the monitoring and maintenance of equipment.

This edition constitutes a technical revision and essentially confirms the contents of the previous edition, even if some progress was included.
